    Brothers and Sisters,

In an abundance of caution and in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, IBEW Local 531 has a few words we’d like to share.  You have probably heard that President Trump has declared the Corona Virus a national emergency and the CDC is recommending cancelling all events/gatherings of 50 or more people.  States are starting to shut down bars/restaurants and any face to face meetings to stall the spread of the virus.  We encourage all members, as well as their families to put the recommended precautions, per the Center for Disease Control (CDC), into action.  These precautions can be found on their website;  www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prepare/prevention.html.  We must be diligent in our efforts to do our best in contributing to a common goal; the safety of all.  No one can for tell how dire this pandemic may become, or how long it could last, therefore we all must do our part in striving to keep our community as safe as possible.

So far, the Unit 17 outage at the NIPSCO Schaefer plant in Wheatfield has been cancelled along with the Burns Harbor PraxAir outage.  There was also a McDonalds remodel in Valparaiso that was going to start today that has also been postponed.  In talking with most of our contractors, they are planning on manning the work until told otherwise.  This includes the walking beam project at Arcelor Mittal, the new LaPorte Hospital, and maintenance at the Michigan City and Wheatfield NIPSCO plants.  This, of course, could be subject to change at any moment.  We will continue to communicate with NECA, our contractors, and customers. We will be sending out notifications on a regular basis, so please keep tabs on our website, Facebook and App notifications.

Also, as of this moment, school has been closed.  Apprentices will be continuing their classroom training via E Learning.   We will continue to assess the situation and will let you know of any changes.  If you have any questions regarding class, please call Roland at 219-879-1090.  The 531-business office will remain open under normal business hours {Monday thru Friday, 7:00 am to 4:30 pm}.

There is a message from the Trustees to Participants, Dependents, and beneficiaries of the NECA-IBEW Welfare Trust Fund (Decatur) in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.  It can be found at www.neca-ibew.org/COVID-19.

There has been some “talk” of BCRC having suspended all testing.  This is NOT true.  BCRC is currently “business as usual”.  If you receive notification of a random, you will be expected to follow all rules.

These are some unprecedented and uncertain times Brothers and Sisters.  Life and work will be far from “the norm”, especially in the immediate future.  Please be proactive in your efforts, keep calm, and do your part as we strive to return to some sense of “normalcy” soon.  For future information, please refer to our website at www.ibewlocal531.org.  You can also download our app via the website to receive push notifications.

    In Solidarity,

    IBEW 531 Staff
