History of IBEW Local 531

I.B.E.W. Local 531 will be celebrating it’s 75th anniversary on February 18th, 2013, having been chartered on that same date in 1938. Members of Local 531 originally worked out of Local 9, Chicago, Illinois. Local 851, Valparaiso was chartered on April 3, 1939 and was amalgamated into Local 531 on November 1, 1950 adding Porter and Jasper counties to Local 531’s jurisdiction which included, at that time, the counties of LaPorte, Starke and Pulaski.

The largest single periods of growth took place at the beginning of WWII with the construction of the Kingsbury Ordinance Plant just south of LaPorte and Bethlehem Steel Company in Burns Harbor during the early 1960’s.

The business office for Local 531 was originally located at 1001 Jefferson Avenue in LaPorte. Union meetings were held at that location as well as at an alternate site in Michigan City, on a separate day, on the 2nd floor of the Labor Temple located on north Franklin Street. The alternate site ceased to be used for union meetings at some point during the early 1960’s.  On August 28th, 1992, Local 531 purchased property at 2751 North State Road 39, where it is located today.

The Northern Indiana Electrical Joint Apprenticeship and Training Trust was established on February 11, 1977. Training for the Local’s apprentices from the time the trust was created took place at the A.K. Smith Career Center which, at that time, was part of the Michigan City High School. The NECA-IBEW Technical Institute located at 301 E. 8th Street, Michigan City was purchased on September, 18, 2000 an from that date to present, has continued to train the best journeymen and wiremen in the I.B.E.W. Training Directors for the apprenticeship include John Lute, Charles Hiigli and Roland Hunter who is currently serving in that position.
